How does solar battery storage work?

A simple grid connected solar system does not need batteries to function.

However, the solar panels on your roof are creating more power than is needed by your home, then the excess goes into the grid. Later, if your panels can’t produce enough electricity, electricity is drawn from the grid to make up the difference.

A battery might be a good option for consumers who want to use their own electricity production during off peak hours i.e. night-time or on gloomy days when the sun is not shinning or if you are experiencing frequent power outages. Home battery storage makes it possible to store the sun’s energy and use it again at night

Here is how a battery storage system works as an example:

Solar panels convert sunlight to DC (Direct Current) electricity.
Any surplus DC electricity charges the Battery.
The inverter converts the DC electricity to AC (Alternating Current) for use in the home.

Battery power during peak time utility prices

People consuming energy from their local utility during “peak times,” usually between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., pay higher rates for that energy usage than when consuming energy during non-peak hours. A consumer with a battery bank can feed off their batteries during those peak times and avoid paying the higher utility rates.

Greater energy independence

When 100 percent self-sufficiency isn’t the goal, a battery bank is still a great way to significantly decrease total dependence on the grid for your PV system’s backup. Many homeowners want the security of knowing they can supply a day or two of electricity without relying on generation from their panels or their local utility.
